In this post, I’ll share my go-to hack to enhance boxed cake mix using an extra egg and yolk, whole milk, and melted butter. This quick and easy modification will leave your cakes moist, rich, and delicious – perfect for any occasion!

An easy recipe hack to make any boxed cake mix taste like you made it from scratch!

Ingredients

  • 4 eggs plus 1 additional yolk
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2/3 cup melted butter, not overly hot
  • 1-2 tsp vanilla extract suggested to use regardless of cake mix flavor
  • 1 15.25 boxed cake mix any flavor

Instructions

  • In a stand mixer mix the eggs and milk. Slowly stream in the butter while mixing. Add in the vanilla. Mix in the cake mix then bake as per the box directions.
  • For cupcakes check on them at around 12 minutes or so, which might be less than what the box suggests. If more time is needed, go from there.

Notes

Note that you will be omitting any oil and water the box recommends.  Instead, we are swapping water for milk and oil for butter.  The additional eggs make for a richer, more dense cake.
